A rare video of a genuine Makonde dance with the use of a  Makonde Mask, taken in the mid eighties. In these days you could still see elderly Makonde men with traditional tribal scars. Makonde carver explaining the problems ethnologists were facing back then in trying to understand the Makonde mind and mythology. Taken in the late eighties.

The Makonde Carvers of Mwenge, Dar-es-Salaam

This is a video-report in five parts, with interviews taken in March 2006.

It features the new generation of Makonde Carvers in Mwenge,
the famous artists-village in the north of Dar-es-Salaam.
